Cultural Icons

(British Ceramics Biennial Festival 2019) at Potteries Museum and Art Gallery (PMAG) was an exhibition curated by Tessa Peters and Christie Brown. The exhibition showcased a selection of traditional flatback figurines from the museum's collection alongside new commissions of contemporary flatbacks by artists Joanne Ayre, Christie Brown, Claire Curneen, Steven Dixon, Ingrid Murphy and Matt Smith, and drawings by John Hewitt.

I led the co-production of contemporary Staffordshire flatback figurines ahead of the BCB Festival. This involved working with a community of makers from Stoke-on-Trent including North Midlands LGBT Older people’s group, Burslem Jubilee Refugee and Asylum Seekers Support Group, Starfish Social Hub, Clay Comrades (BCB studio members) and the Portland Inn Project. The participants learned from industry specialists including Tony Chanillor (China Painter), and Ed Bently, master mould maker. They had the opportunity to create their own flatback figurines, responding to the collection at PMAG. We co-produced and edition of over 120 contemporary flatback figurines using moulds that were created from designs of the six commissioned artists.

The production was extended in a participatory space where members of the public could gain an insight into the process by making flatbacks in a production line with the community makers.
