My interest in architectural ceramics was sparked during research undertaken prior to and during the Real World Ceramics residency in Jatiwangi, West Java in 2020. I started exploring heritage, materials and forms in the built environment, what they say about people and place.

I was excited by the idea that architectural ceramic forms such as bricks and coping stones could be used to express and symbolise values in society. I am interested in how these ideas can be shifted, examined and transformed by altering existing bricks, making new forms that are based on personal and collective narratives and playing with scale and position.

I am currently developing a new installation of co-designed coping stones which will be presented at the British Ceramics Biennial Festival in September 2021. This piece will draw on peoples’ significant routes over the past year as profiles for these forms.
